What's On Your Bucket List?
by Joe Bonura, CSP
For all of my life, I have had a bucket list. For years, my grandfather
told me stories of his hometown, the little village of Contessa
Entellina in Sicily. l remember telling him, "Popsy, one day,
I will visit Contessa." I was the first Bonura in my family
to visit my grandfather's birthplace.
Family Changing Experience
It was a life changing experience, not only for me, but for the
entire Bonura family both in Sicily and in the USA. Since my wife
Carol and I visited Contessa, My son Nick has been there; my daughter
Ann has been there; both of my sisters Linda and Kay have been there,
Kay with her daughter and Linda with her husband Walter.
Opened The Door
My bucket list goal opened the door to a whole new family connection
on the other side of the world. Until that time, the family in Contessa
Entellina did not know we existed. It was almost 100 years since
my grandfather left Italy to come to America. His family immigrated
in 1892 when he was six years old. His parents' generation was the
last generation to keep in contact with our extended family.
My wife and I love opera, and we had a goal to see Luciano Pavarotti
sing in person -- another goal on my bucket list. In 1982 we attended
a Pavarotti concert in San Francisco, and we met him at a cocktail
party after the performance. While waiting to visit with him, we
had the privilege of visiting with Sherrill Milnes, one of opera's
greatest baritones. I continue to be stunned and amazed when I think
of that magical night in California.
Up, Up And Away
When I was a young boy, I rode my bike to the airport to watch
the airplanes take off. I set a goal to become a pilot, and years
later, I became a private pilot owning my own plane. One of the
highlights of my flying experience was going up with a friend and
instructor, Gary Polsgrove, and doing some aerobatic maneuvers.
(Another goal checked off of my bucket list)
Another goal to open an advertising agency by the time I was 30
years old was realized when I was 29 years and nine months old.
Bon Advertising Agency became the second largest advertising agency
in the state of Kentucky.
The Bucket List
One of my favorite movies was "The Bucket List" with
Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Because they were both diagnosed
with terminal illnesses, they devised a list of all the fun things
they wanted to do before they shuffled off. Together they experienced
one adventure after another.
Spice Of Life
A bucket list adds spice to life and gives me something beyond
the status quo to look forward to. Besides my faith and family,
it gives me a reason to get up and go to work, if for no other reason
than to earn the money to enjoy the things on my bucket list.
So What Is Next On My Bucket List?
When I was in the advertising agency business, I had a car dealer
client V.V. Cooke. V.V. invited me to the Indianapolis 500 time
trials with the Corvette Club. I had never been to a car race, and
I did not own a Corvette, so V.V. loaned me a Corvette and off I
Three At a Time
There were over 500 Corvettes at this event, and on day three,
they allowed all the Corvettes to enter the track and line up in
threes. We were allowed to do one lap around the famous Indy track,
three at a time, but there were so many of us that we crowded each
other and we could only do a partial lap. Since that experience,
I have been an Indy racing fan, and I hope for a chance to finish
that lap some day.
Indy Car, Here I Come
My desire to drive a real Indy car was stirred -- my next bucket
list goal. Yesterday, two friends and business colleagues gave me
the opportunity to finish my lap around an Indy track. The opportunity
is a driving session with the Mario Andretti School of Racing. WOW!
After a training session, I will drive an Indy car around a track
for eight minutes. Soon, another dream fulfilled. I cannot wait
to experience the thrill of driving a real Indy car, and I will
share the video in a future ezine.
Please do not misinterpret this article as a bragging list. It
is simply a demonstration of how you can have, be, or do anything
you want, if you set your goal and take the steps to accomplish
Alive At 95
Recently, former president, George H.W. Bush, tandem parachuted
out of a helicopter at 6,000 feet. He is 90 years old and plans
to do it again when he is 95. It had to be one of the most exciting
moments of his life.
Patch The Holes In Your Bucket
Never let your bucket get a hole in it because your life will
start to dribble out, and you will be left sitting on the sidelines
while life passes you by. This is not a dress rehearsal; this is
your life! Live your life before you end up saying to yourself,
"If only I had
