Today Is The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Each morning I look in the mirror and say out loud, "Today
is the first day of the rest of my life!" The good news is
that each day gives you the opportunity to start over; you do not
have to wait for the new year to make resolutions. You can make
every day the beginning of your new year and your new life.
Forget The Past
Forget what happened yesterday, last week, last month, and last
year. There is nothing that you can do to change the past, so forget
the past and focus on the future. Each day, you have an opportunity
to exercise your greatest power as a human being: the power to start
Ripe with Opportunity
This applies regardless of whether your yesterdays were great
successes or failures. Each day is ripe with opportunity for success
to move forward. If you started a diet last week, and yesterday
you blew it, rather than give up, you simply begin again today.
Just look in the mirror and say, "Today is the first day of
the rest of my life, and I will go on a diet beginning today."
Follow Through Today
You can also apply that principle to your sales career. Do not
get discouraged because you did not follow through with making the
number of phone calls that you set as your goal. Be determined that
today is the first day of the rest of your sales career.
Your First Day on the Job
Remember how you felt your first day on the job? Remember how
you dressed for success? Remember how you saw yourself growing in
your new career? Everything was fun, new, and exciting. You landed
the job. Or better yet, you had the opportunity to start a new career,
and it all began on that special day.
My First Day
My first day as an account executive in the advertising agency
business was the culmination of years of study and preparation.
I recall when opening the top drawer of my desk, I found a note
left by the previous occupant that read, "You are only as good
as your last performance." My last performance began that day
and has continued every day in the advertising business and as a
professional author, speaker, and sales trainer. I have always considered
each day as an opportunity to shape my future. You can do the same
thing beginning tomorrow morning when you make the choice to stick
to a plan and to be goal-focused.
Your New Day Is Dawning
Here is how you begin:
What would you like your life to be five years from now?
Begin today doing the things that will take you on that journey.

Then take that action.
