The Possible Dream
by Joe Bonura, CSP
The Impossible Is Possible
If I called you on an air-to-ground phone while flying at an altitude
of 35,000 feet with an outside temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit
to tell you that I am flying from Zurich, Switzerland to Atlanta,
Georgia in a little over 9 hours, would this surprise you? Probably
Lock Him Up
Now, suppose the year is 1911, what would you say if I told you
that I was going to take such a trip? You would hear words like,
Impossible. It cannot be done. You must be crazy. Someone
should lock him up.
That Does Compute
Even more intriguing, I might add that I am typing this article
on my laptop computer on that exact flight, and I will download
it to my home computer as soon as it is complete on Delta's wireless
in-flight connection. Now you would really want to lock me up!
The Impossible Dream
Impossible is nothing more than a state of belief or a losers
excuse for not trying. If you truly believe that something is impossible,
then it will be impossible. Because you live in a world where the
impossible becomes possible every day, you must open your mind and
heart to the unlimited possibilities that surround you every day.
The Silver Dollar
In 1972, I had dinner with a friend, and when the check came, he
reached into his pocket to pay the check and pulled out a 1972 Eisenhower
silver dollar. A closer look at the coin revealed the heads
side had a profile of the great General and President Dwight David
Eisenhower, and the tails side was embossed with an American
eagle landing on the moon.
It was in commemoration of Neil Armstrong's historic landing on
the moon. I asked him if I could keep the coin as a memento of having
started my business in 1972, and he willingly gave it to me. The
tails side of the coin reminded me that if mankind can go
to the moon, the only limitations I have are those that I impose
upon myself. I still have that coin today, and I look at it whenever
I feel that something is going to be impossible.
You Can Do It Too
What is my point? My message is that if anyone can do something,
then you can do it too. You must decide what are your dreams and
aspirations, and then proceed aggressively and positively. What
is holding you back? Is it money? I have started two very successful
businesses without borrowing a dime. Is it lack of knowledge? There
are apprenticeships, books, and night courses on any subject you
wish. Is it lack of sales skills? The book stores and libraries
are full of information on how to market and sell. Is it a time
issue? We are all blessed with the same twenty-four-hour day. It
is how you use those twenty-four hours that makes the difference.
Excuses Be Gone
Most people have more excuses than good ideas. Stop looking at
all of the reasons that you cannot succeed and begin seeking ways
to make your ideas materialize.
Everything is impossible until someone does it. That somebody is
