Fly Me To The Moon
by Joe Bonura, CSP
MY MAGIC CARPET
I recall as a boy that I saw the movie Thief of Baghdad
in which the hero used a magic carpet to fly through the air. Later
that day, after I painted magical designs on a bed sheet, I sat
for hours on my painted sheet and imagined myself sailing through
the air on my very own magic carpet. Unfortunately, I didnt
escape the floor of my bedroom, but I continued to dream of conquering
MY DREAM CAME TRUE
Since that time, I have flown on many magic carpets courtesy of
Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest, and many more airlines
than I could ever recall. As I write this, I am waiting for a flight
to Orlando, Florida. Because I love to fly, I have owned four magic
carpets: a Cessna 178, Cessna 172, Cessna 210, and a Beech Baron.
If you have the right belief system, you can achieve anything.
When, as a boy, I sat on my magic carpet, I was not speculating
on the cost of an airline ticket or on the monthly payments on a
Beech Baron; I was simply focused on my dream of flying.
TEACH OR SING?
As a young man, Luciano Pavarotti contemplated whether he would
become a singer or a teacher. He asked his father if he could do
both, and his father replied that a man, who tries to sit in two
chairs, will fall between the chairs. In reality, you must choose
one chair and work hard at becoming the best that you can achieve
while occupying that chair. Thank goodness that Pavarotti decided
to sit in the musical chair, for we were richer for the experience
of hearing his powerful voice.
STAY THE COURSE
It took Pavarotti seven years to make his first professional singing
debut, and then another seven years before he appeared at the Metropolitan
Opera House in New York City, but once he set his course, he soared.
He moved forward because he followed his passion. Passion plus purpose
BE AN EAGLE
The harder you work to achieve your goals, the more successful
you will be in your achievements. H. Ross Perot says that continuous
success builds arrogance and complacency. He is most impressed with
people who love the battlefield and who are willing to go to the
wall. If you read his book Where Eagles Dare, you will
understand how much he believes in that philosophy.
My Dad came home from work one day with a deflated red balloon.
To my urgent pleas, he put the balloon to his lips and began to
blow. Nothing happened because the balloon was too stiff, and Dad
could not blow hard enough to inflate the balloon. He held the balloon
between the thumb and index fingers of each hand and stretched the
balloon as far as he could. I asked Dad why he was doing that, and
he replied that it was easier to inflate the balloon after he stretched
it. When he tried again, the balloon inflated easily.
POP GOES YOUR FUTURE
Are you stretching yourself mentally every day? The more you stretch
your mind, the more malleable it becomes. Prompted by new thinking,
new ideas will begin to flow. When you stretch your mind with knowledge,
there is no limit to what you can accomplish. Your mind can stretch
like the balloon, and even beyond the balloon. The balloon stretches
until it pops, but when you flex your mind to the ultimate, you
will enter a new unlimited dimension of success and personal development.
THE FIRST DAY
You can have, be, or do what you want, if you know what you want.
Take some time to think about how you arrived where you are presently.
If you are pleased with the journey so far, that is fine; however,
it may be time to stretch yourself to reach new heights. If you
are not pleased with your status, it is time to ignite your fire.
Treat today as the first day of the rest of your life.
